Position Overview:

The Senior Product Compliance Engineer leads product compliance, certification, and environmental regulatory initiatives across Columbus McKinnon’s product portfolio. This role serves as a subject matter expert and works closely with product development, legal, procurement, supply chain, product management, quality, and marketing teams to ensure products meet applicable laws, regulations, industry standards, and customer requirements in global markets. The Senior Product Compliance Engineer drives compliance strategies throughout the product lifecycle, provides guidance on regulatory requirements, leads certification and testing activities, and supports risk assessment and mitigation efforts. This position is responsible for maintaining and improving compliance processes, managing complex regulatory projects, and ensuring accurate compliance documentation. The role also serves as a key point of contact for customers, suppliers, certification agencies, and regulatory authorities, providing technical expertise and helping communicate compliance requirements and product certifications to internal and external stakeholders. This position may mentor junior team members and contribute to the continuous improvement of compliance programs, supporting the organization's commitment to product safety, regulatory compliance, and market access.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead product compliance and certification activities for new and existing products, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, industry standards, and customer requirements in global markets.
  • Serve as the primary compliance advisor to product development teams, providing technical guidance throughout the product lifecycle and identifying regulatory risks early in the design process.
  • Drive the development, review, and maintenance of environmental and regulatory compliance documentation, including bill of material assessments, supplier declarations, and supporting certification records.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in regional, national, and international regulations, evaluating business impact and leading implementation of compliance requirements across affected products.
  • Lead complex product certification projects and coordinate testing, validation, and approval activities with internal teams, third-party laboratories, and certification agencies.
  • Partner with Legal, Product Management, Quality, Procurement, Supply Chain, and Marketing teams to develop compliance strategies and ensure consistent communication of regulatory requirements and product certifications.
  • Provide technical expertise and support for customer, supplier, and regulatory inquiries related to product compliance, environmental regulations, and certification status.
  • Oversee the collection, review, and validation of supplier material compliance data, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and alignment with corporate compliance requirements.
  • Maintain and improve compliance processes, tools, databases, and Product Data Management (PDM) records to support efficient regulatory documentation and reporting.
  • Lead regulatory assessments for international chemical and material regulations, including TSCA, California Proposition 65, RoHS, REACH, and other applicable environmental and product safety requirements.
  • Support corporate sustainability and environmental reporting initiatives by providing compliance data, regulatory insights, and recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Conduct compliance risk assessments, identify potential non-compliance issues, and develop corrective action plans to minimize business and regulatory exposure.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and cross-functional team members on product compliance requirements, best practices, and regulatory processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance product compliance, reduce certification cycle times, and support successful market access for Columbus McKinnon products worldwide.

Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of materials science, polymers, metallurgy, chemistry, environmental science, or related technical disciplines, supported by professional experience in product compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong understanding of global product compliance regulations, environmental requirements, certification processes, and industry standards affecting industrial and manufacturing products.
  • Ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements, assess their impact on products and business operations, and provide practical compliance solutions.
  • Experience leading compliance assessments related to regulations such as TSCA, California Proposition 65, RoHS, REACH, and other international environmental and product safety requirements.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple compliance projects simultaneously, prioritize competing demands, and deliver results with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify compliance risks, evaluate alternatives, and recommend effective corrective actions.
  • Advanced experience using compliance databases, Product Data Management (PDM) systems, technical documentation tools, and regulatory research resources.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Quality, Legal, Procurement, Supply Chain, Product Management, and Marketing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to explain technical and regulatory requirements to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to lead discussions with suppliers, customers, certification agencies, testing laboratories, and regulatory authorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, train, and provide guidance to junior engineers and team members on compliance processes, regulations, and best practices.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate compliance records and documentation.
  • Continuous learning mindset with the ability to stay current on emerging regulations, industry trends, and evolving compliance requirements.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to Columbus McKinnon facilities, suppliers, customers, and certification organizations as business needs require.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Materials, Chemical, Biomedical) or a related technical field from an ABET-accredited program in the United States or an equivalent internationally recognized institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in product compliance, product certification, environmental compliance, regulatory engineering, or a related field within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing product certification activities with third-party agencies and supporting regulatory approvals for products in global markets.
  • Strong working knowledge of environmental and product compliance regulations, including RoHS, REACH, TSCA, California Proposition 65, and other applicable international requirements.
  • Experience interpreting technical standards, regulatory requirements, and certification criteria, and applying them throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional compliance projects and collaborate effectively with Engineering, Quality, Legal, Procurement, Supply Chain, and Product Management teams.
  • Experience working directly with suppliers, testing laboratories, certification bodies, and regulatory organizations to obtain and maintain compliance documentation.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and drive projects to completion.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, including the ability to present technical and regulatory information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience supporting global product compliance programs across multiple regions, including North America, Europe, and Asia.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or providing technical leadership on compliance-related projects.
  • Knowledge of sustainability reporting, environmental stewardship programs, and emerging regulatory trends affecting industrial products.
  • Professional certifications or specialized training related to product compliance, regulatory affairs, environmental regulations, or quality systems.
