Job Summary/Overview
Operates various gas and electric furnaces to stress relieve, normalize, harden, carburize, and temper chain and chain attachments performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Loads specified amounts of chain and chain attachments into furnace by hand, shovel, or overhead hoist.
- Turns valves to regulate injection of fuel and air into furnace to produce appropriate furnace atmospheres.
- Moves controls to regulate flow of natural gas to furnace burners.
- Maintains proper flow of water coolant to furnace bearings.
- Load chain into baskets using chain puller.
- Unload chain into pallets or drums using chain puller.
- Start-up furnaces by opening various gas valves, safety shut off valves and turning on main power.
- Relight furnaces in the event of power failure by opening various gas valves and safety shut off valves.
- Shutdown furnaces by closing various gas valves, RX gas valves, and turning off main power.
- Load and unload chain and chain attachments by hand from various types of fixtures.
- Perform minor maintenance on furnaces and furnace fixtures.
- Clean out scale that has accumulated in quench tanks.
- Maintain work sheets and furnace control charts.
- Operate all furnaces.
- Maintains good housekeeping practices.
- Able to set-up and operate listed heat treat equipment using operating instruction book.
- Pit Furnaces, RX Generator, Lindberg Furnaces, Rotary Furnace, Continuous Furnace, Semi-Automatic Welder, Beavermatic, Link Heater, Link Tester, Induction Units, Tumbler, and Vibrators.
- Able to use Manufacturing Instruction Book (Dept. 706) titled "Heat Treatment" as a reference source.
- Perform preventative and minor repair maintenance on all department equipment as found in the Equipment Operating Instruction book.
- Supportive of team effort to maintain the highest heat treatment quality standards.
- Pro-active in workplace safety.
- Able to perform process control functions, such a hardness checks on all heat-treated items.

- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Ability to lift/lower/push/pull up to 40 lbs. safely.
