Job Summary/Overview

Role: Mechanical Design Engineer (UK Business)

Location: Chennai, India

 

The Engineer - Mechanical Design is responsible for designing and developing crane systems, lifting equipment, and mechanical components by creating detailed engineering drawings, 3D models, calculations, and technical documentation. The role collaborates with global cross-functional teams to deliver safe, compliant, cost-effective, and customer-focused engineering solutions throughout the product development and project execution lifecycle.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design Engineering: Independently identify priorities and manage pre-order and post-order engineering tasks for customer projects.
  • CAD Modelling: Create accurate 2D drawings and 3D models using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Autodesk Inventor, ensuring alignment with internal specifications, performance requirements, and safety standards.
  • Technical Documentation: Prepare bills of materials and enter product data into manufacturing systems such as Teamcenter and SAP.
  • Concept Development: Understand project requirements and develop practical design concepts for cranes and material handling systems.
  • Engineering Analysis: Perform basic calculations and simulations to validate design strength, performance, and reliability.
  • Material & Component Selection: Choose appropriate materials and components based on technical, functional, and budget considerations.
  • Compliance & Standards: Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and best practices
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, electrical engineers, production teams, and crane building partners to deliver complete engineering solutions.
  • Project Execution: Support the full engineering process—from concept development to manufacturing and commissioning.
  • Material Handling Expertise: Contribute to projects involving conveying systems, material transfer, and mechanical equipment selection.

Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities

 

  • Understanding of technical calculations and engineering fundamentals
  • Bilingual – English proficiency required
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with strong creativity, co-operation, and communication.
  • Strong organisational skills to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Quick learner with adaptability to changing project needs.
  • Comfortable working in a global, remote team environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in a similar mechanical design role
  • Experience with parametric CAD tools (AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks)
  • Knowledge of Teamcenter (Siemens) and SAP, or any other ERP
